Step up to bulk growing. This monotub kit includes sterilized rye grain spawn, a pre-hydrated bulk substrate and the tub itself, so you can grow bigger harvests of a wide range of mushroom species at home.
What's Included
- 2 × 1 lb sterilized rye grain spawn bags with 0.2 µm filter, injection port, sterile indicator strip and batch tracking
- 4.5 lb pasteurized CVG bulk substrate (coco coir, vermiculite, gypsum)
- 16 qt monotub (unmodified; no drilling needed)
- 2 glove packs (nitrile gloves and alcohol prep pads), step-by-step instructions and a FunGuy sticker
Live mushroom culture is sold separately. The grain bags are ready for your own liquid culture.
How It Works
- Inoculate: Wipe each injection port with a prep pad and inject 3–5 cc of liquid culture per bag.
- Colonize the grain: Keep the bags dark at 75–80°F. Growth usually appears in 7–14 days.
- Spawn to bulk: When the grain is fully white, mix it with the substrate in the clean tub and level the surface.
- Colonize the tub: Keep the lid on and the tub dark until the surface is covered in white mycelium.
- Fruit: Crack the lid for fresh air exchange and give the tub indirect light. Open the lid to fan it, and mist only when the top or sides look dry.
- Harvest: Pick before the caps flatten, rehydrate, and repeat for more flushes.
Timeline
- First visible growth on the grain: 7–14 days after inoculation
- First harvest: about 3–5 weeks after inoculation, depending on species and conditions
- Up to 3 flushes per kit
Ideal Conditions
- Colonization: 75–80°F, in the dark
- Fruiting: 65–75°F, indirect light, steady fresh air, high humidity
Yield Expectations
Yield varies with species, culture and conditions. Expect up to 3 flushes from one tub; rehydrate between flushes.
FAQ
Which mushrooms can I grow? Works with a wide range of mushroom species. The coco coir substrate isn't ideal for lion's mane or shiitake, which prefer hardwood sawdust.
Is a culture included? No. Use about 3–5 cc of liquid culture per grain bag.
Do I need a pressure cooker? No. The grain is sterilized and the substrate is pasteurized and ready to use.
How long can I store the kit? Use it within 2 weeks. Un-inoculated bags keep up to 4 weeks in a cool, dark place.
Monotub or all-in-one bag? All-in-one bags are the simplest. A monotub gives a larger surface area and bigger flushes.
